MacBook Air Features
The MacBook Air is Apple's most popular laptop. It provides Apple's best balance of performance, portability, and pricing.
M2 MacBook Air (Mid 2022)
The M2 MacBook Air is faster with an all-new design. The iconic tapered edge has been replaced with a thin, flat, and uniform chassis available in four colors.
The next-generation Apple Silicon processor has faster CPU cores and more GPU cores than the M1 it replaces. The M2 CPU clocks about 18% faster and the GPU about 35% faster.
The display has also increased in size slightly to 13.6-inches, and it has Apple's iconic notch holding a 1080p webcam. The Liquid Retina Display is as bright and colorful as ever with 500 nits of brightness and a P3 color gamut.
Other M2 MacBook Air features include:
Apple will release the M2 MacBook Air during the summer of 2022.
M1 MacBook Air (Late 2020)
The late 2020 model with Apple Silicon was a big leap over its Intel predecessor. The M1 processor makes it 3.5x faster with 5x faster graphics. The updated model also added up to six hours of extra battery life.
The M1 chip's balance of power and efficiency allows the new MacBook Air to be fanless, offering silent performance. The big-little layout of the eight-core processor also makes it light on power consumption. However, it can kick in the performance cores when necessary. The efficiency cores by themselves outperform the Intel Core-i3 processor.
Apart from those internal upgrades, the M1 MacBook Air looks exactly like the Intel model it replaced. That includes the improved Magic Keyboard that finally fixes the problems in Apple's old butterfly keys.
Other M1 MacBook Air features include:
Released in November 2020, the M1 MacBook Air is frequently on sale at Apple Authorized Resellers.
Early 2020 MacBook Air with Intel
This older model, the last of the Intel-based line, had released in March 2020. It launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. This period was when many people first began working from home, seeking new laptops for remote work and videoconferencing. This model had a brief eight-month product cycle before the M1 model supplanted it in November 2020.
The early 2020 Macbook Air was the first to abandon the problematic butterfly keyboard from previous MacBook Air models. The Magic Keyboard in the 2020 MacBooks has scissor-switch keys. They're much like the keys on the standalone Magic Keyboard that Apple bundles with iMacs. Its reliability appears to be much improved.
This model's performance pales in comparison to that of its Apple Silicon successor. Many users also complained about its fans firing up more than in previous MacBook Air models. However, the early 2020 MacBook Air is still a capable machine. You can often save big on it at Apple Authorized Resellers.
Other early 2020 MacBook Air features include:
- 1.1GHz dual-core Intel i3 processor
- Configurable to 1.1GHz quad-core i5 or 1.2GHz quad-core i7
- 13.3-inch display
- 2560 x 1600 resolution at 227 ppi
- 8GB RAM, configurable to 16GB
- True Tone
- Touch ID
- Physical row of Function keys
- Aluminum unibody build
- gold, silver, space gray color options
- Started at $999
2019 MacBook Air with Intel
The 2019 MacBook Air is still a perfectly reliable laptop. However, because of its aging processors and butterfly keyboard, you'll only want to buy it today if you find it at a steep discount.
By the time Apple released this model, the company had added protective membranes to the butterfly keyboard. They help keep out dust and debris that contributed to stuck or lopsided keys in older models. However, if you can find models in stock, you may be able to save big on this aging model.
Other 2019 MacBook features:
- 1.6GHz dual-core Intel i5 processor
- 13.3-inch display
- 2560 x 1600 resolution at 227 ppi
- 8GB RAM, configurable to 16GB
- True Tone
- Touch ID
- Physical row of Function keys
- Aluminum unibody build
- gold, silver, space gray color options
- Started at $1,099
Where to Find MacBook Air Deals
Apple
Don't expect to see MacBook Air sales at Apple's online or physical stores. The closest Apple gets to sales are gift-card bundles for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The company doesn't offer standard discount prices on any of its products.
However, the company does offer $100 off Macs for eligible college students. Military veterans can also take 10% off their orders. Both methods require ID verification.
You can order refurbished MacBooks from Apple. These models are in like-new condition and carry a standard warranty and return policy. They offer decent savings compared to their new counterparts.
If you have an Apple Store near you, they may price-match local competitors selling Macs for less.
Aside from these exceptions, you're more likely to find the best prices at other stores.
Apple Resellers
Apple's official resellers frequently offer discounts on Apple devices, including models of the MacBook Air for sale. Top retailers to watch include Amazon, Best Buy, B&H Photo, Adorama, Expercom, Abt, and Tiger Direct.
AppleInsider also partners with Apple Authorized Resellers for exclusive discount codes. You can track their latest sales both on this page and in our Mac price guide.
No matter where you buy your MacBook Air, be sure to read up on the store's policies before checking out. Smaller online resellers like B&H and Adorama may only approve open-box returns or exchanges if your Mac has a factory defect. They won't likely accept a return because you changed your mind or didn't like the product. Apple, Amazon, and Best Buy have return policies more typical of big-box retail chains, including for buyer's remorse, but you won't find the best MacBook Air deals on build-to-order (BTO) configurations with more RAM or extra storage at those retailers compared to Adorama, B&H Photo and Expercom.
