Which iPhone should I buy?
When choosing your next phone, you likely have a few ideas in mind already about what your priority is. Apple has the most complex phone lineup they've ever had, and it can be difficult to make a choice based on price or specs alone. Here we break down each device series, and what standout features might drive you to that particular model to help choose between the best iPhone deals.
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
Apple continued the new tradition of keeping features identical across device sizes in the same class. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have the Dynamic Island, 48MP Main Camera, and always-on display.
The notch is gone in favor of a pill-shaped cutout at the top of the display. It houses the necessary components for Face ID and the selfie camera, but it now also acts as an interactive part of the UI.
The always-on display shows a dimmed version of the wallpaper, the clock, widgets, and Live Activities. It is slowed to 1Hz to keep battery consumption to a minimum, and the display only turns off completely when face down or in a pocket.
Every camera has been upgraded via hardware updates or the new Photonic Engine. Capture massive 48MP photos in ProRAW with the new Main Camera.
The iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999 for 128GB of storage, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max starts at $1,099. They come in four colors: space black, deep purple, gold, and silver.
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
Apple introduced the iPhone 14 Plus instead of another mini model. The feature set is identical across the standard iPhone 14 lineup, with only the display size as a differentiator.
A15 Bionic returns from the iPhone 13 Pro to offer improved graphical performance. The camera system has better sensors and performs better in low light.
Crash Detection will alert emergency services if the user is in a car crash. Also, the iPhone 14 lineup can connect to a satellite if no other service is available to contact help. These new safety features are available across iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.
The iPhone 14 starts at $799 for 128GB storage, while the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899. They ship in five colors: starlight, midnight, blue, purple, and Product(Red).
iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are identical in every way except for screen size. There are numerous upgrades from the previous generation, including much improved cameras, 120Hz refresh displays, and longer battery life.
Apple took some of the guesswork out of choosing an iPhone in 2021 by separating features based on pro or non-pro models. So, customers need only choose if they want the pro iPhone, then decide on display size.
What sets the iPhone 13 Pro models apart is the 3x telephoto lens, bigger camera sensors, and 120Hz ProMotion displays. You'll be able to take higher-quality pictures in low lighting and have more optical zoom when using the iPhone 13 Pro.
The iPhone 13 Pro starts at $999 for 128GB of storage, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max starts at $1,099. They come in four colors: graphite, silver, gold, and Sierra Blue. There is also a 1TB storage option for the first time.
iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini
Like the pro models, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini share identical feature sets and are only differed by screen size. Upgrades from the previous generation include a smaller notch, improved camera system, and more battery life.
The wide camera and ultra-wide camera both capture more light when taking a photo, which means better indoor or low light photos. Also, Apple fit the image sensor stabilization system on the wide angle lens for a steadier handheld shot.
Thanks to the 128GB base storage, buying an iPhone 13 may actually be cheaper than getting a used iPhone 12 at a discount, especially after carrier subsidies and sales. Definitely consider the iPhone 13 mini if you like that size, because this could be the last version of that model.
The iPhone 13 starts at $799 for 128GB storage, while the iPhone 13 mini starts at $699. They ship in five colors: starlight, midnight, blue, pink, and Product(Red).
iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
Apple first introduced 5G to its smartphone lineup with its 2020 models. While there was less of a gap between standard and pro-series iPhones in these models, the higher-end iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max still stand out from their lower-priced peers in several key categories.
Like in the iPhone 11 series, the pro-level iPhones have an extra telephoto lens that lets you take quality pictures from farther away. The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max also add a LiDAR scanner on the back, providing much faster autofocus in low light and Night Mode portrait shots.
The iPhone 12 Pro series also add stainless-steel finishes, a brighter display, more base storage, and more RAM. Additionally, the iPhone 12 Pro Max gives you the biggest iPhone screen Apple has ever made, at a massive 6.7 inches. Otherwise, the two pairs of phones share all the internal features listed in the iPhone 12 section below.
You may consider the iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max if you're looking for the modern technology at a steep discount. These devices offer a great value, however, unless price is your only concern, the iPhone 13 lineup may have similar discounts and rebates from carriers.
The iPhone 12 Pro starts at $999 for 128GB of storage, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at $1,099. They come in four colors: graphite, silver, gold, and pacific blue.
iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini
The 5G-ready iPhone 12 has the same screen size as the iPhone 11, but in a slightly smaller frame as Apple reduced the borders around its displays this generation. Meanwhile, the iPhone 12 mini introduced Apple's all-screen iPhone design to a device that's smaller than the iPhone SE.
Like their pro-level counterparts, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini have a new flat-edged design reminiscent of Apple's flagship design from 2010-2013. However, these two have aluminum frames rather than the steel in the iPhone 12 Pro series.
All of Apple's 2020 iPhones have the A14 Bionic processor, Face ID, and similar battery life. While the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini lack a telephoto lens, they still have wide-angle and ultra-wide lenses, supporting Night Mode, Portrait Mode, and digital zoom.
As with the other 2020 models, you may consider the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 mini if you're looking for the modern technology at a steep discount. However, the iPhone 13 lineup may have similar discounts and rebates from carriers, so consider those before purchasing the older device.
The iPhone 12 starts at $799 for 64GB storage, while the iPhone 12 mini starts at $699. They ship in five colors: white, black, blue, green, and Product(Red).
Stay tuned for Black Friday 2023 deals as AppleInsider will be tracking the steepest discounts and best sales across the Apple product line throughout the remainder of 2022 and well into 2023.
